How to Avoid Procrastination – An 8 Step Transformational Process

In this article, we consider a key factor important in how to avoid procrastination and individual and group success.  That is, developing a sense of urgency in your life as well as your business and avoid procrastination.  It is vital to recognize the high cost of complacency and accurately seeing what is at stake while simultaneously avoiding complacency.  While it is important to stay focused, the danger in becoming complacent is ultimately not accomplishing vitally needed actions in the path toward success.  Not acting aggressively can often result in missing critical checkpoints on the path to your big goals.

Harvard professor John Kotter has stated that  the most important aspects of true urgency are relentlessness, steadiness and the purposeful pursuit of a goal while “continuously purging irrelevant activities to provide time for the important and to prevent burn-out.”  His 8-step process for implementing change offers a framework for organizations and individuals over 18 to 24 months, beginning with a sense of urgency which must be sustained throughout the transformational process.

Step 1:  Increase urgency:  Using case studies, gain emotional buy-in in yourself and/or your organization.  Ensure that these emotions are sufficient and long-lasting in order to overcome procrastination as challenges are encountered.

Step 2 – Build the guiding team – Create or tap into a team of successful practitioners that can focus and guide the organization to completion.

Step 3 – Get the vision right:  Where there is no vision, the people perish.  Use the team’s expertise to determine what will block achievement and lay-in plans and processes to stay on track.

Step 4:  Communicate for buy-in – Ensure that your organization has clear understanding of the plan and benefits for completing each task.

Step 5:  Empower action – Use a rewards system to build and capitalize on early successes.  Ensure that everyone knows of significant achievements as they occur.

Step 6:  Create short-term wins – Build on short-term wins; using their momentum to move through additional critical tasks and reinforce the team’s and each individual’s vision.

Step 7 – Keeping at it – Maintain and strengthen your efforts using communication, encouragement, and additional training for the team and its stakeholders.

Step 8:  Make change stick – Prepare the organization for change.  Establish changes to the culture and  individual standing.  For individuals, this means adapting to new friendships and partners as well as letting go of those previously holding you back.
