In order to locate products that sell online, we need to understand what people already want to buy. Another consideration is whether to sell information products or physical products.  Most online marketers end up choosing information products due to higher commissions, availability of immediate electronic delivery and customer demand.  In either case, some research is needed in order to select a profitable “niche” that provides solutions to consumer needs and that provide enough motivation for the marketer to pursue when the inevitable doubts and challenges arise. 

Research is also needed in finding/selecting “hot” products to sell within the chosen niche, while considering the level of competition that currently exits. Market share or level of competition is the ratio of a brand’s sales versus the total market sales. Because the overriding objective of getting into this business is making a profit, choosing the market segment with the least formidable competition is a big consideration. Although it would be possible to succeed even against tough competition, it is best to seek a niche/products with the highest possible unfulfilled demand.

It is also important to determine the general interest in the product. This helps to gauge where the demand and competition exists in the big picture. Simply saying, if there isn’t much demand for the product, and there isn’t much competition, it would seem that it might not be a good choice. But the research doesn’t stop there. We must also learn how others are advertising those products. If there are others placing ads, it may mean that it’s still a good product to promote.
