The three biggest niche marketing segments online are health, wealth, and love.  Marketers that are in these areas have a lot of competition, but by working hard, it is possible to reach the top.  Sub niches are easier, however, e.g., “losing weight” within the health niche.  Regardless of niche, Mike Cowles, teaches that it is much faster to do affiliate marketing in your chosen niche vs. creating your own products.

Here is what is needed in either case:

1.  Squeeze PageSqueeze Page TemplateAlthough a squeeze page is easy to create, most people will enter a “fake” email address.  What is really needed to build a list quickly is a way to actually get your prospects’ “real” email.  Your target opt-in rate should be 40% or better, which means you’ll need a very good offer.

2.  Initial Email – Once on the list, tell your subscribers that you’ll be sending them some special information soon and to look for it in their mailbox.  This will improve your opt-in percentage, plus start the process of building a relationship with your new prospect.  Use a picture or send a video to personalize your introduction.

3.  Separate Your List – You should include a paid offer fairly soon, in order to separate your list into “lookers” and “buyers.”  In general, for every two emails offering valuable free information you should include one paid offer.  You can also survey your list to separate further into those that are aggressive vs. just interested in getting occasional information.  Mike Cowles suggests to subscribers who are in the process of an opt-out, an opportunitty to receive only infrequent, valuable special offers.  List automation supporting all of these features can be set up using Aweber.

4.  Joint Venture – Make an offer to several (up to 10 or 20) other marketers to put one of their products in your email sequence (forever), if they will send out one email to their list with your offer.  Let each one of them know that you’ll be doing this with 10 other marketers (especially if you don’t have a big list yet), so they’ll know you’ll be building a worthy following in the near future.  You also want to get your offer to go viral if possible, for maximum impact.

Using this technique can definitely get 1,000 people on your list within a week.  To facilitate the process, Mike Cowles now offers a new Rocket List Builder system, based on an innovative Facebook App.  His App captures his prospect’s “real” email and writes to their Facebook wall, so that all of their friends will see the offer as well.  Thus you’ve now leveraged the viral aspects of Facebook, making it really a slam dunk for your success.  To see how this works and to get a free copy of our squeeze page code, just click the button below for immediate access to the download.  An overview and detailed training by Mike is also available.

Niche Affiliate Marketing System (NAMS) Workshop 3

One of the most important ways to protect your hard-earned affiliate commissions is cloaking your links.  For example, the following is a ClickBank link for Ryan Lee’s current continuity offer:  http://xxx.ryanleecom.hop.clinkbank.net.  If you send this link out in a post, tweet, or email do you realize that anyone buying Ryan’s program can simply replace your hoplink and buy from themself, cutting out your hard-earned commission?

Also, what about an affiliate program that changes its link structure?  If you’ve posted links all over the Internet will you be able to remember every one of them and have the time to go change each one manually?  Also, your vendor may be cancelled from Clickbank or other affiliate system for violating terms of service?  In either case, wouldn’t it be better to use a cloaking service in order to be able to change all of your links in one place at one time?

Many marketers commonly use free link shortener services, of which bit.ly is the most popular.  But this only solves the cloaking problem above and only  in certain cases.  For instance, cloaking a ClickBank hoplink with bit.ly will resolve to the full link in the browser address bar, where it can be easily replaced.  In addition, link shortening services are now being blocked on the Internet, rendering them virtually useless.

Any service (free or paid) that you use should be hosted on your domain and control the type of masking used.  This allows you to manage and control your own redirects from one central place.  In addition, this allows you to keep your affiliate programs honest, e.g., are they paying you commissions you deserve.  What are the best ways to do redirects?

  • PHP Redirect (301 or 302 redirect).  php code samples for 301 and 302 redirectCode example shown at right.  It takes a couple minutes to set this up on your hosting account.  For SEO purposes, it is better to use the 302 redirect so you don’t transfer page rank from your own page.
  • HTaccess Redirect.  This is very similar, except that the code is placed in your server .htaccess file Be careful, because one mistake in your .htaccess file.  As an example of the 302 redirect, use “Redirect 302 /directoryname/  http://Affiliate_Link”
  • Meta Refresh Redirect.  Similar to the first two except that only a 302 redirect (doesn’t pass page rank) is supported.  An example is shown below:

<html><head>
<meta http-equiv=”Refresh” content=”0;URL=http://Your_Affiliate_Link”>
</head><body></body></html>

What is the “dark side” of cloaking your links?  Black hat is the use of unethical tactics and methods to increase your chances of making money online.  For instance cookie stuffing is a practice of hiding thousands of links on a page, so that after visiting this page, any affiliate purchase you make will go the “stuffer.”  A 1×1 pixel “iframe”  or “image pixel” is used in this practice.  A related “white hat” technique uses a P3P header, depending on if the affiliate program accepts it.

Using the P3P header technique is the only ethical way to completely avoid exposing your hoplink in an affiliate system such as ClickBank.  This is also know as a “stealth redirect,” as used in Jason Fladlien and Wil Mattos’ EasyRedirect Script.  Using an ethical white hat “cookie stuffing” technique, their system drops in a cookie to the browser.  As mentioned above, this technique is ethical and supported by ClickBank and many additional affiliate systems.

ClickBank is arguably the granddaddy of affiliate systems.  Neil Hartley, Director of Business Development for ClickBank, gave an excellent overall summary on a recent webinar, including tips for success as a vendor or affiliate and some overall statistics.  ClickBank today, processes over 35,000 transactions per day among its 50,000 products in hundreds of niche markets.  Its 100,000+ affiliates are paid up to 75% commissions on sales and Clickbank has paid over $1.9 Billion to date.  On average, 40% of ClickBank sales are international

What does it take to get involved with ClickBank?  As explained on the webinar, it’s not really a “Field of Dreams.”  Many vendors and affiliates, wrongly adopt the philosophy of “Build it and they will come.”  It can be a rude awakening for many that a significant level of effort and passion is really needed to achieve that “promised land” success.  Some tips to those who want to achieve significant success using ClickBank’s system are as follows:

  1. Take Action.  Do not procrastinate.  Many spend too much time over educating and/or preparing vs. doing.  Be prepared to fail fast and often, learning from your mistakes.

  2. Invest in Your Efforts.  Super affiliates invest in their online businesses for software, marketing and outsourcing.  Learn from experts and don’t be afraid to spend money on marketing tools.
  3. Persevere Through Hardship.  Many of the most successful affiliates have attained success only after disappointing initial results.
  4. Believe in Yourself.  Understand the power of your own mind and abilities.  Do not get derailed by negative thoughts.
  5. List Build Around Your Niche.  Super affiliates build strong mailing lists through email capture and then make repeat sales.
  6. Test, Test, Test.  Test everything regularly.  Simulate a visitor’s travels through your site to the order form and beyond.  Test and tweak the language used in your promotions to be sure it is compelling.
  7. Promote Widely.  Use a variety of methods including email marketing, blogs, review sites, and paid methods.  Notice which promotional methods work best for your demographic.

Although ClickBank and affiliate marketing offer significant financial opportunity, it is similar to any business.  A significant level of effort is needed in order to “break-through.”  But for those with drive, stamina, and determination it offers a path to success, unparalleled in time.  And, in fact, the level of investment can be much less than needed for a more traditional business start-up.

In this article, we review a methodology developed by Mike Cowles and Keith Dougherty to consistently and quickly generate income as an affiliate marketer.  Their methodology, which is now sold as a product in Turbo Affiliate Cash, involves mostly free tools, e.g., OpenOffice.org, and a six step process as follows:Turbo Affiliate Cash

  1. Select an affiliate product.  Mike suggests going to one of the affiliate centers such as ClickBank, SimpleOneClick, etc. and select a product with at least 20 copies sold and between 10 and 50% conversion.
  2. Get free content.  Contact the product owner and ask if they would participate in a quick email interview, of 5 to 7 questions, e.g., “How would you get started with Amazon marketing.”
  3. Use the report which you have developed to build a list.  Submit to sites such as tradebits.com with a free offer in exchange for their email address.
  4. Find free graphics.  Use professional headlines, screen capture, screen shots, and logo icons to enhance your content.  Mike suggests using gimp.org vs. spending megabucks for PhotoShop and SqueezePageCity.com for free templates.

  5. Leverage JV traffic.  Go back to the person you interviewed and ask if they would mind posting to their blog (and write the post/swipe copy for them).
  6. Free back-end offers.  Offer master resale rights to people that download your report.  Offer your partner the ability to embed their own links, using PDF Blueprint (a Mike Cowles Product).  Then, place additional discount and free offers that your partner agrees to on your download page.

Mike Cowles is a very innovative marketer, as evidenced by this strategy.  This methodology is much easier than standard affiliate marketing and jump starts a new marketer’s ability to develop joint venture partners.  Using this innovative methodology makes it very hard for a marketer to say no to your offer.

In 2006 when the real estate market collapsed in Florida, Nicole lost everything.  She was in depression and couldn’t find any job thus was forced to apply for welfare.  All the time, she knew there was a way out and didn’t want to remain on government assistance.

She found a lot of lead capture pages about making money at home.  One person stood out in her quest, however, and she began following her.  It was Tracey Walker.  Nichole read an ebook that Tracey had written.

Nicole points out what is needed in order to get the attention of a mentor.  She joined everything that Tracey was in and consistently followed her blog and did everything that she was told her to do.  And one day Tracey called her at said she needed to follow her in Mlm Lead System Pro.  By the 4th or 5th month, staying up all night (she had a newborn), she began to implement everything she learned.  She started 5-figure checks at this point in the business she had chosen.

She then hired Cedrick Harris as her coach at which point she established her Internet brand as “Mailbox Money Queen,” under Cedrick’s guidance, and the rest is history (or coming attractions).  What are Nicole’s two favorite marketing techniques?:

  • Videos – Everyone needs video in their arsenal.
  • Facebook – The second most visited site in the world with over 500,000 users.

Nicole’s advice to those just getting started is first to figure out what your element of uniqueness that you can bring online.  What are your characteristics that are in your personal comfort zone?  Be ok with being yourself and don’t hesitate to experiment.  She encourages her followers to “sell” their services to others when first getting going.  Are you good at writing and copy, building websites, setting up blogs?  These are excellent ways to leverage your existing talents and skills for many individuals and businesses who don’t have even these basic skills.

At a recent affiliate marketing conference there was considerable discussion of SEO strategy.  As a summary of one session in particular, we offer the following 10 tips on ways to improve your search engine page rankings, as presented by Commission River VP Patrick Oborn.

  • Register the targeted keyword in your domain name.  This requires research up-front in order to determine the most advantageous keywords relating to your site.
  • Use folders instead of subdomains -  This technique keeps the search engine focused on your main domain, rather than a separate URL closely.  Instead of http://products.jimgreen.us, use http://www.jimgreen.us/products.html.
  • Always use “www” in front of your domain – This will avoid the issue of splitting the focus on what the search engines consider two separate domains, e.g., http://www.jimgreen.us and http://jimgreen.use and result in higher rankings overall.  Using redirect in your domain hosting account will solve this problem.
  • Use dashes vs. underscores in file names
  • Use “<h1>” tags properly, e.g., H1 should match your Page Title Meta Tags for ease of indexing by the search engines.
  • Google is now evaluating page load time in rankings.  This can be improved by: 1) shrinking graphics size, 2) removing syndicated ad feeds and 3) upgrading hosting to a faster server.  Google is considering slow loading pages as less than serious about their Internet presence.
  • Use 3-way or 4-way linking strategies vs. simple reciprocal linking and keep your linking partners relevant to your area of business.
  • Create actual 404.html pages.  Without this, the search engine may find “duplicate” pages  that your site is generating for broken links.  Use of hard 301 redirect will fix this issue.
  • Use long tail keywords such as 3 or 4 words, so that you are also encapsulating shorter 1 and 2 word keywords.
  • Use alt tags for all images on your website.  These tags should be long tail keywords where possible to provide as much information as possible to the search engines.

We hope that these tips will be immediately useful in helping your website reach the top rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.  Please leave any comments and suggestions to improve our community.
