Ron Gelok recently shared some of the marketing approaches/scripts that he uses on Facebook via an informative webinar with Amy Neal and Jessica Peretti.  He shared the main 4 approaches he uses along with accompanying scripts, primarily on Facebook (but these approaches obviously would work in any context):

  1. How have you been affected by the economy?  “Hey this may or may not be for you, but are you open to making extra money in this economy?”  is an approach used and taught by Ray Higdon.  Another one would be “Hey I don’t know if this would be for you, but are you open to checking out a side project to make extra money?”
  2. Opinion Respect – “You obviously are a very sharp guy and know what you are doing when it comes to your business (honest compliment).  I recently started my own business and I was hoping you could do me a favor.  Could you take a look at what I’m doing and just give me your honest opinion on it?  It would mean a lot to me.
  3. Attraction – When someone asks about your positive posts in social media, e.g., Max Steingart’s approach of “I’m ready to help 5 more people make a fortune online.”  “This may or may not be for you, but you’re welcome to check it out.  What’s your number and I’ll give you the info.”
  4. Hail Mary Pass – “Hey just throwing it out there.  You’re not open to making extra money from home are ya?”

Once you get a yes to any of the above, just say:  “Great, what’s your number and a good time to chat?  Mine is XXXXXXXX.”  Then after the call, set a follow-up time based on the answer to the following.  “Hey how soon can you take a look?”

Here is a script for the actual phone conversation:

Hey John!

Make small talk for about a minute or two to build some rapport by asking about them, the weather, sports, books, or what you have in common.

Here’s what I’m going to do.  I’m going to send you a little video with information about my business.  It gives you everything you need to know.  How soon can you take a look?

Great, I’ll give you a call afterwards to see what you think.  Keep in mind this may or may not be for you.  Sound good?

Here is the close when following up:

What did you like best about what you saw? {Don’t talk}

How would you build this business?

How serious are you?  Is this something you want to do with me?

If questions, then 3-way call with your sponsor or leader in your company. {Don’t try to answer questions yourself, so that your prospect will be able to envision doing this process himself.}

This brief webinar provided some excellent tips and suggestions as well as very specific scripts that can be used when prospecting, either online or in your local contacts sphere.  One of the main things to keep in mind is that Facebook exists for social interaction and direct prospecting attempts will be viewed negatively, possibly resulting in cancellation of your account.  But if used in the context of legitimately making friends and communicating with people, a natural progression to include people looking at your business is completely valid.  For further information and tips, you may check out the excellent session on Facebook Secrets provided by Facebook expert Jim Chou.

Facebook originally was created for use by college students and now has become the largest social network, by surpassing rival MySpace and now receives more weekly visits than Google.  Unlike MySpace, Facebook has been very tolerant of unsolicited promotions, although its policy states that “You will not send or otherwise post unauthorized commercial communications (such as spam) on Facebook.”

Facebook’s recent approach to this issue has been to control the types of friend requests that users can make.  Age and other factors now limit the ability of users to connect with other members who are in different generations and/or have few mutual interests.  For those using Facebook as a source of potential marketing leads, what are the implications?

Social networks expert, Max Steingart, believes  that these changes won’t significantly impact the marketing methods that he teaches his students.  This is because to some degree what Facebook is doing makes sense and shouldn’t really be limiting to those pursuing a viable strategy.  It doesn’t make sense to recruit outside your own age group, anyway, because of limited common interests.

The underlying premises may be flawed, however, and he expects Facebook’s stringent rules to evolve over time.  Facebook, in fact, would stand to lose some of the momentum it has built up if its changes limit the flexibility of its use by its fastest growing segment:  women between 45 and 55. How will a grandmother now be able to connect via Facebook with relatives to see pictures of the grandchildren in far away locations?

As pointed out by Steingart, the main issue is network marketers who send unsolicited ads to others via Facebook.  As mentioned, rival MySpace has long prevented this type of activity by more closely adhering to its terms of service.  Facebook appears to be making an attempt to control spam by limited marketers’ ability to connect with friends and expand their networks.   The question is, how can Facebook determine the “intent” in a friend request?

Making friends socially is something that every marketer needs to do.  When their “enthusiasm” leads them to post or send unsolicited links to their business websites, it is only at this point that Facebook’s terms of service have been violated.  There is nothing in the Facebook terms of service that prevents making new friends.   Like it or not, network marketing activities will take place on social networks.  But, network marketers don’t need to be banned unless their activities warrant their removal.

Many leaders in network marketing today teach their teams that the Internet and other online recruiting doesn’t work effectively, while still sending them out to shopping malls, and gas stations to find prospects.  Of course their brute force  methods work, but generate extremely high attrition rates. Today, Facebook has over 500 million users and MySpace 263 million.  And, it is now possible to use social networks to build a worldwide business, rejection free, never leaving home.

The demographic and personal information about people in these social networks alone is staggering.  Search tools provided enable marketers in almost any industry to easily identify hundreds of targeted prospects for just about any product or service.  If it works for regular business, why not MLM?  In fact, network marketers have already started using Facebook paid advertising to generate high quality MLM business leads.

Although the 3 foot rule has been used effectively in network marketing for over 75 years, there have also been many networkers successfully recruiting teams online since the days of America Online over 15 years ago.  Now with the easy availability of all this demographic information at your fingertips, why haven’t more in network marketing “broken the code” on the social networks?

We believe that today’s networking “professionals” have been very poorly trained, and are trying to market on social networks with a clumsy and almost dangerous approach.  Most, in fact are trained in the use of “elevator” speeches, which they’re supposed to quickly deliver in order to generate leads for their business, and have imported these techniques to Facebook and MySpace.  The problem with this, especially when used in the context of social networks is this behavior is nothing more than spam.    Whether used in elevators, or on Facebook, people have become very resistant to these approaches.    And,  MySpace considers it a violation terms which will quickly get a person’s page canceled.

So what is the answer?  Can the social network sites provide a good source of MLM leads?  The answer is a resounding yes, according to Facebook and Myspace expert Max Steingart.  His training has produced top earners in many different network marketing companies.  His methods teach a low-key sales approach, modeled on the basic concepts of Dale Carnegie and others, which are based on first creating genuine relationships with prospects.  People buy from people they know, like, and trust.

In this article we discuss the concepts of attraction marketing as they pertain to social networks.  Although the strategy used isn’t the classic attraction marketing approach of making a compelling offer in order to capture email address/build a list, etc., the concepts are similar.   Instead of a free report or training offer, the “bait” is your profile and interaction socially with prospects.  So, to get started, you need to set-up your pages on Facebook, and/or MySpace, etc.  Then determine what strategy you want to use.

There are three types of pages on the social networks:

  • Total commercial for one’s business – This type of page is viewed as a salesperson trying to sell something. This may lead to spam complaints when trying to connect and isn’t recommended.
  • Part personal, part business – People will communicate with reservations, waiting for the page owner to hit them with their sales pitch.  A better approach but still not recommended, unless you are already a 6-figure earner or better.
  • All about you, no business – Magnetically attracts people to you.  This is the recommended approach.

There are three ways to brand yourself:

  • As someone happy and/or wildly successful – This is the best strategy, even if you are at one of the ladder’s bottom rungs at this point, e.g., just getting started.  One way to leverage this method is to post motivational messages on your profile at least a couple times daily.  What quotes and authors have helped you in your life?  Share these things with your network.
  • As an expert – Also a good approach, but requires some expertise and credentials already in place.
  • As a successful network marketing professional – Limits you to only those already in the network marketing  industry.

Once your pages are created and/or adjusted for your particular strategy, then begin connecting with old friends and making new friends.  Use a memory jogger list, similar to those found in any network marketing training course to “remind” yourself of the people you know.  If you’re not familiar with network marketing, you can just use the Yellow Pages categories to remind you of people to add to your network.

If you’re in network marketing, you probably don’t want to listen to the trainers in your company.  That is, especially if they’re advising you to be aggressive in approaching your social media friends with an “elevator” speech.  This is what all the amateurs are doing, and it won’t work.  Rather you need to question them conversationally to determine a need in their life for your products and/or business opportunity.  The rule is never to approach anyone without first determining their need.  If done correctly, your friends will ask you what you do, believing that it was their idea for you to share information with them about your business and/or products.

In this article, we provide an overview of the various sources of leads for MLM or any business model using the Internet. To do this we’ll take a look inside one of the leading attraction marketing training systems on the Internet, My Lead System Pro. Within this training system are contained many great suggested marketing methods, lead sources, tips, techniques and tools for the serious online marketer. Here is our overview:

  • Facebook/MySpace/LinkedIn – The largest social media sites are excellent, representing  millions of possible leads for your business.  These sites have many excellent tools for marketing, including profiles of millions of people who are perfect candidates for your business offerings.  The new Advanced Search functionality on Facebook, as well as MySpace’s more extensive search capabilities can quickly locate members of groups, geographic proximity, age, and other demographics to quickly identify prospects most likely to be your prospects.
  • Video Marketing – Videos on YouTube can be one of the quickest ways to develop viral content.  Video marketing not only can be used to publish your informational content to hundreds of highly-ranked sites, but also creates backlinks to your primary website or blog.
  • PayPerClick Marketing – This is a paid strategy using Google, Yahoo, and Bing paid ads.  This strategy requires advanced training and should be entered carefully, since it can quickly get expensive.  It can also be the quickest way to generate business leads.
  • Blogging – This is a core strategy, especially with WordPress.org self hosted blogs which are popular in personal branding for marketing purposes and easy to get quickly ranked using search engine optimization.  This blog is an an example of using blogging strategy and is ranked for many keywords, although it has only been in existence about 8 months currently.
  • ListBuilders – Special paid memberships can both attract a following for your personal list as well as provide an opportunity to send your ads to thousands of other subscribers each week.
  • Ezine/Solo Ads – Ezines, or electronic magazines, offer the ability to include your ad, or devote an entire issue to your offer.  A solo ad can sometimes generate over one thousand leads from a single blast to the list.  The advantage of this method, is that the list is pre-qualified and receptive to your offer, if carefully chosen.
  • Forum Marketing – Many high-profile marketing forums exist on the Internet, such as Mike Dillard‘s Better Networker, the Warrior Forum, freelancemom.com/forum and others.  High quality content can be published in these forums including your signature file.
  • Content/Article Marketing – Hundreds of online directories of articles exist which accept short articles from 300 to 1,000 words.  Most allow the inclusion of two backlinks, e.g., to your blog and funded proposal/squeeze page in exchange for the content you provide.  Submitting duplicate content can be minimized and the submission process automated using tools such as Automatic Article Submitter.

The Internet offers a rich environment for the professional marketer,  including many excellent tools to automate the process.    When getting started, it is recommended starting with one method and perfecting that before moving on to additional methods.  Further information is available in the My Lead System Pro marketing system and training.

In this article, we specifically discuss social media and a strategy for attraction marketing.  How can you attract customers and if you’re a network marketer, business partners?  Not surprisingly, the best advice comes from going back to basics and using timeless advice from classics such as Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”

Attraction marketing on Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn and other social media sites is best done following a specific process of making friends.  We’ll use the paradigm of network marketing to explain this strategy in more detail, but the same concepts apply to any business model.  We’ll also use Facebook as the main example, although most concepts apply to other social media as well.

The first thing to realize is that Facebook is meant for social interaction, rather than business building.  That, however is not a problem, since the underlying strategy is first making friends.  So in this regard, Facebook is perfect.

Since Facebook is not for business building, any reference to a business or products you sell should not be present on your page.  How many marketers violate this principle?  Nor should your profile contain links to your company’s business website.  You should also not have “Likes” related to your company or products.  Does this sound like different advice that you have been getting from your network marketing company itself? How is their “advice” working for you so far?

Next, you need to do something to attract interest to you on a daily basis, such as posting a generic motivational video.  In addition, social media guru Max Steingart recommends using a catchy status, such as “Jim Green is ready to help 4 more people earn a fortune online,” and just change the numbering every day.

Then try to connect with old friends and/or invite them to join Facebook, while looking for new friends with similar interests on a daily basis.  The Facebook advanced search feature can quickly locate potential people that might be prospects for your business.  You are then in control of exactly you “invite” as friends and who you attempt to develop a relationship with.

Then when someone accepts a friend request from you, or you accept a new friend that requested you, develop a relationship first and attempt to qualify the person BEFORE trying to share your business or products with them.  Also when someone comments or asks about your daily status, you can assume they’re attracted to you and possibly a candidate for your business.  Only share your business with qualified prospects who express a need for what you can offer them.

We highly recommend Max Steingart’s Endless Free Leads course, bootcamps, and coaching for further information and assistance with your direct marketing strategy.

All Marketers Are Liars

On a recent conference call, some of the newest crop of Internet-based network marketers shared their individual breakthrough secrets, as well as a way to capitalize on and follow in their successful methods and strategies.

Today, 4.5 million people per day are looking for a way to make money online.  87% of the population hate their current situation.  People are burned out on the traditional business model, including traditional network marketing.  This is known as the “over-priced ‘crap’ get rich formula, if you just buy my over priced snake oil and get 5 people to get 5 people, you’re going to be rich, formula.”  It shouldn’t surprise anyone that this is no longer working in the industry.

David Wood, in particular, shared his own earnings of $500,000 over the last 8 months with a list size of only 10,000.  Internet marketers, generally experience $1/or less per month per list member.  What is different in the latest results coming from marketers like David Wood and others?

David Wood shared his secret of “the Power Triangle.”  Step 1 is to join a greater team and get noticed enough that the leadership WANTS to promote you.  Step 2 is to create an initial story of profit and success.  Step 3 is to mastermind with other leaders and capitalize on their larger audience.  Step 4 is to turn over the profits to fund the growth of a MUCH bigger, more profitable list.

Brian Edmondson, a leading marketer,  shared an Internet approach, called the Agora Model, used by one of his large clients, a $300 million business.  He shared that the main objective should be building a list first and then later capitalizing on sales to the list members.  Here’s why should you focus on list building:

  • Most people will never find your site
  • If they do, they’ll leave within seconds
  • If they don’t leave within seconds, they won’t buy
  • Once they leave, they’ll never come back

Finally, one of the latest Internet secrets as briefly exposed.  How can Facebook be leveraged in the process?  John Womack, who briefly passed David Wood in marketing prowess shared some of his secrets:

  • Google has now stated that Facebook is the one company that they are nervous about.  The average person spends 19 minutes per day on Facebook.
  • One problem for most marketers is that you cannot market or promote any home business opportunity, but there are easy ways around this problem.

This group of superstars, then provided a way for the average person to take the next step.  In other words, how can the latest and most profitable secrets be leveraged in order for the average person to:

  • create a massive, viral list
  • become part of an elite marketing group
  • join a company with the most powerful sponsors in the industry

Although those that missed the opportunity may feel slightly left behind, what these leaders did accomplish was to raise the bar in the industry.  In network marketing, the best sponsor will only be successful when he has successfully trained those on his team that are “trainable” to achieve their potential.  This group has taken it to a new level by offering an “open kimono” strategy, facing the very real possibility that they will be surpassed by divulging their own secrets of success.

Additional information on attraction marketing, the latest Internet marketing advances, and training from some of the most remarkable Internet and offline marketers is available for the taking in the MyLeadSystemPro attraction marketing system.

In this article we examine the effect of leading social media networking websites on the network marketing industry.  In particular, we wanted to know how effective these sites are for generating MLM leads.  And if a good source for MLM leads, what are the best sites at this time?  Finally, we explore how attraction marketing really works.

In MLM, the entire landscape has been fundamentally changed by the Internet.  Despite this, most MLM distributors have yet to address how to build their business online. Most still rely on traditional recruiting and are  generating most of their leads using the 3-foot rule (people they come in contact with each day).   Although a minority, some network marketers are using leads created online by professional internet marketers and sold for up to $10-15 per lead.

Now, as increasing numbers of MLM distributors join social media for personal reasons, an interest has grown in how to expand their contacts online and to leverage the social media websites for their business opportunity.  James Humphrey of the BlogView.com, who is a leading social media expert, recommends using FaceBook, YouTube, Digg, and Twitter as the best social media MLM lead sources.

Of these, the leading MLM lead source is currently Facebook, mainly because of its ubiquity.  Facebook has over 350 million active members (those who have returned to the site in the last 30 days). Participating in groups and making friends are the key networking activities that will produce results on Facebook.

The next social media site that is a must is YouTube.  Video marketing is currently the hottest worldwide trend in marketing, period.  There are 1 billion videos online at various sites, accounting for 60% of all Internet traffic.  Currently, videos are given high rankings and evaluated within minutes in the search engines.  In addition to making helpful and inspirational videos yourself, you can recommend and/or contribute to others’ content through comments and suggestions.

Third best MLM lead source is Digg.  You should be making friends and building relationships on Digg, as well as Facebook.  Search out interesting articles on MLM (or your business area) and initiate and/or become a contributor to others’ content “threads” in areas of like interest.

Fourth and perhaps becoming best known is Twitter.  You need a Twitter account, since the search engines rank your activities here almost as quickly as videos.  Use Twitter to support the other social sites by “tweeting” your own and others’ content that you find helpful.

The key to social media marketing is establishing yourself as a contributor and adding value to others’ work online.

The key to all of the social media is establishing yourself as a contributor and adding value, or “attraction marketing. Others are attracted to you when you share yourself “from the heart” and your information and personality resonates with them.  When you follow these guidelines, you’ll start receiving back much more than you can possibly hope to contribute.  MLM leads are then merely a by-product of your own contributions in the social media “world.”
