But in network marketing, the proprietor is truly a sole proprietor, although often backed by a multi million dollar (or in some cases billion dollar) enterprise.  In a recent meeting among distributors in his business (which is Numis Network), Chris asked how many attendees had actually made a list of at least 100 prospects to contact.  Only about 6 in attendance had actually completed this basic task.

Why is this the case (assuming it is true in many companies) for the vast number of network marketing distributors?  After all, the list is crucial to success in the industry.  In fact Chris refers to a network marketer’s list as their “proprietary capital,” meaning their most important asset, and something that is unique to each individual.

This factor is the key ingredient that separates network marketing from more traditional businesses.  Sure, it is possible to pour large sums of cash into a network marketing business through advertising, but it isn’t a necessity, as is more often the case with traditional business.  A network marketer’s “proprietary capital” is free, although it must be continually refined and developed.

But why don’t more distributors follow through on this crucial step that could spell the difference between failure and having moderate or even a level of success beyond their wildest dreams.  Perhaps failing to “dream” is why?  They possibly need to get back to the dreaming stage before attempting their list building exercise.  And if sufficiently energized by their dreams, list building would just “come naturally.”

Belief and desire must come first.  Chris suggests that network marketing distributors must first imagine, vividly what their eventual success would look like.  It is crucial to get a clear mental picture of success, by even rehearsing, if needed.  Some of the most successful distributors took painstaking, detailed steps in visualizing and “acting out” their eventual success, well before it became a reality.  Then, with a clear picture and belief in their eventual outcome, the seemingly more mundane tasks such as actually taking the time to build a list are more likely to be accomplished, if not automatic.

Is network marketing easy?  No.  Is any business venture easy?  Not usually.  The degree of internal fortitude needed in order to persist, often through multiple failures is significant in any case.  But if you’ve made the decision to think big, get a clear picture of your eventual outcome with the realization that you’ll need to hang onto it very tightly.  Maybe you won’t enjoy the ride, but if you persist to your destination, it will be worth it.  This is true whether you’re attempting a more traditional venture or the somewhat offbeat network marketing model.

With a good opportunity, you should be able to enroll about 1 out of 30 people with whom you connect.  Attraction marketing guru David Wood had 20 people looking at his business every day when he first started. Working 6 days a week, this would result in 480 exposures and, on average, earnings of 16x$100, or $1600.  Not quite enough, but you get the idea, and please realize that David became the Internet’s leading attraction marketing guru in the MLM niche using even this  level of effort. Similarly, you need to focus each day on what you need to do to make the income you need and want.  Focus on enough production today to sustain your lifestyle.  Do what you have to do.  If your personal sphere of influence isn’t big enough to sustain 20 or 30 daily connections, start working on generating leads, e.g., via using one of many possible attraction marketing strategies, meeting new people in your daily walk, or whatever it takes.

In network marketing, 99% of your own efforts dictate your earnings in the beginning.  Later on, you’ll have created the leverage by your initial efforts that will sustain your business.  Be inspired in order to accomplish the level of production needed to sustain your “needs.”  This won’t come naturally for most people in North America, since our culture has created a great amount of wealth.  Dig deep and find what will motivate you to make the efforts needed each day.

Although it sounds new, attraction marketing is nothing new, really.  Leaders in network marketing and many other industries have been using the methodology for years, even before the Internet’s existence. So why is it that many people these days seem to want to use the Internet to replace the relationship building process in sponsoring for their network marketing business?

Ray Higdon believes that the network marketing industry has been exploited (he uses a more colorful term) by “gurus” taking advantage of people’s hopes and dreams, selling them expensive courses related to Internet from a more technical perspective, without leading to tangible success.  At the same time, however, he believes that network marketing is the last bastion of free enterprise.  He had $300 in the bank and was broke when he started out on his fifth attempt in MLM, but is today his company’s top recruiter.  He makes extensive use of social media. But, if a new recruit tells him he doesn’t want to talk to people; but rather to just market online, he tells them to go sign up with someone else.   According to Ray, everyone hates prospecting, but leaders just buckle in and do it anyway.

What if someone on your team comes to you saying they’ve burned out their warm market?  Ray’s approach is to have them go through a “fun” exercise, to “get them out of the way first.”  Call them up and say “I just started a new enterprise and I know this isn’t for you, but I need to mark you off my list, so I can move on.”  Many will naturally ask what it is about, to which you can reply:  “I have this short video that you can watch about it; then just get back to me if you want additional information.”  Ray finds this actually results in sign-ups.

If not building an elaborate attraction marketing system, then for a new person who just signed up, what are the most important things that should be done immediately?  David Wood, the KING of attraction marketing, now starts every new person on very traditional methods.  Specifically,  if someone has been in 6 MLMs and failed every time, then home meetings will probably not work.  On the other hand, if it’s been awhile or a new person has never tried home meetings, then they will more likely work than not.  David suggests making a list of all the resources that you have available to you now vs. later.  What connections are the strongest in your life?  Leverage these first, and then work as hard as possible to expand beyond these, including building that attraction marketing system for maximum long term result.

Answering a related question: “What would you do tonight to make money tomorrow?”  Rob Fore suggests getting with those you’re closest to and just tell them “from the heart” why you’re starting your enterprise and see if they wouldn’t want to join you.  What could be better than working on an awesome project with those closest to you?  Ray Higdon believes that speed ties in with those you’re closest to.  Make an agreement with yourself that you’re just an inviter in a time which more people than ever are “hurting.”  If you want something you’re never had, you have to be willing to do something you’ve never done.

David Wood had a change of opinion after 90 days online, when he realized that it wasn’t possible to solely depend on the Internet and automated sales funnels in building a big enterprise.  He began advising his team to entirely start with a “warm market” approach.  From a big picture perspective, how many people have sufficient background to immediately succeed in online attraction marketing?  In reality, most need to start with their “real world” resources first.

Have the MLSP founders and leaders changed course?  And can the Internet actually be used to automate attraction marketing (especially in the network marketing world)?  Although evidence suggests that it not only possible, but very viable, this isn’t a good strategy for brand new network marketers to completely rely on due to the complexity.  Long term, yes, but early on the tried and true methods reign, just like the “old-time” pros told us they would!

Norbert Orlewicz and Brian Fanale recently put forth a simple strategy for members of their My Lead System Pro (MLSP) membership system.  Many of the attendees thought this to be a reversal of  MLSP’s previous teaching for at least two reasons.  First, Norbert and Brian highly stressed the fact that  although simple, a realistic plan for attraction marketing will take 6 to 12 months, perhaps to dispel any notion that their system would produce immediate or very short term success.   And second, they stressed that network marketers can’t really afford to “bypass” their friends and family.  Does this constitute a complete reversal of direction for MLSP?

Norbert and Brian also made it clear that at some point in their “growth cycle,” the most successful marketers would develop their own custom systems vs. relying entirely on MLSP’s replicated system autoresponder follow-up campaigns,  squeeze pages and sales pages.  Not every marketer will follow the same path, but each will progress and make use of the Internet to varying degree according to their own capabilities, interests, and strategies.

MLSP continues to rely on the wisdom and example of Mike Dillard, who was one of the first to bring the disciplines of attraction marketing and network marketing together.  This despite the fact that they seem to have put some distance between themselves and Mike’s “traditional MLM is broke” approach.  Here are Norbert’s suggested  simple steps and blueprint for becoming successful in attraction marketing:

  1. Be a student of direct response marketing and attraction marketing.  Become more valuable in the process, as you’ll develop the ability to help others in their marketing plans and efforts.  This is the basis of Mike Dillard’s “funded proposal” concept.
  2. Provide solutions.  Begin using replicated websites that lead with value, training and feature solutions to your prospects’ problems.  Norbert suggests taking  a page from the playbook of the “father of attraction marketing,” Mike Dillard.  Mike’s genius was providing a simple solution for the problems being experienced by his prospects involving an upfront offer, an autoresponder, and funded proposal affiliate system.  Note that network marketing gurus have always sold their own “products,” which in some cases have become their primary income stream.
  3. Personalize.  At some point, you’ll be ready to customize your MLSP system.  Norbert suggests first customizing the email autoresponders by adding your own “voice.”  Later, you can add your own videos and customizations to your landing, sales, and welcome pages.
  4. Become a trainer.  Begin to teach and train others.  Create training videos, host webinars, and train your team.
  5. Leadership.  Create your own opt-in offers, capture pages, and individualized sales funnels.  You may consider your own products, e.g., an ebook, video training course, boot camp, etc.  But don’t fake this step, e.g., this is not the time to “fake it until you make it.”

When joining any network marketing or direct sales company, many people wonder if they “just might” be overpaying for products that they are buying.  Many direct sales companies, if reputable, offer a 30 day or 60 day “no questions asked” product return option, to help overcome this perception and to underscore the value of the products provided.   Last weekend, Numis Network went the extra mile,  offering a 5 year buy-back offer for any of their products purchased on a monthly auto-shipment.  This has never been done in network marketing, or possibly any other sales venue previously.

I was able to watch the entire conference video. It was VERY obvious that Ian (Numis Networks founder) and the others were VERY tired (understatement) of answering the that same question, “WHAT’S IT GOING TO BE WORTH IN 5 YEARS”.  I applaud their effort and their willingness to buy back coins, a risk I myself would be afraid to promise.  With the minting of Numis members coins being extremely high and all of us ‘coin collectors’ being fully aware that scarcity is what really drives up a value, for Ian and company to be willing to buy back ANACS graded coins in only 5 years, and at the club cost, is a bold promise.  Those of us that are currently purchasing newly minted silver coins are putting our faith in the fact that the price of precious metals (silver) will continue to rise, or at least not decline. Rob Fore, recently shared his secrets in leveraging authority sites, in order to generate over 50 leads (his best day is now 61 leads) per day. Rob uses the My Lead System Pro marketing platform for his landing pages, sales, and welcome pages.

Rob’s secret technique, which he shared for MLSP members,  is based on  research using tools such as Market Samurai to discover keywords already ranking on authority sites.  Then he creates content on this keyword and submits to the same authority site.  Finally, he uses Article Marketing Robot to create massive backlinks to the article he posted on the site.  This knocks the current article off Google’s front page, replacing with his new article.  The magic of this technique completely changes the amount of traffic getting to his articles, e.g., instead of 20 views per month he gets usually 20 views per day.

The second non-negotiable item in network marketing is personal development.  Network marketers are 100% stock owners in “You Inc.”  Developing the needed skills comes from reading the right books, and attending events.  Jim Rohn has said that you have to work harder on yourself than on your business.

Burke Hedges, gives great credit for his success to a time he was visited by his sister-in-law, who brought him the book, The Greatest Salesman in the World, by Og Mandino.  This one book entirely changed his life at that point.  Burke believes, however, that reading a book isn’t enough, because personal development may also necessitate studying and putting information into practice.  If you “really want” to achieve something will do whatever it takes, often taking actions that are inconvenient, or you don’t “want” to do.

Ray Higdon recently shared his “non-techie” tips that he has used to produce up to 50 leads daily in his business.   Ray is highly successful as a top leader in MLSP and the top income earner in his primary company.   Although these techniques are mostly offline, they should be viewed as a part of an overall marketing strategy, which also includes online marketing.  These techniques, are for “hustlers,” vs. “hopers” in the industry.  If you’re more about online content, consider making videos of YOU going around town doing these techniques.  That could be an awesome integration of online content for attraction marketing.  What a concept!

Although Ray’s methods are mainly offline methods, they could be easily incorporated into your daily attraction marketing campaigns, by making videos of YOU using these methods to generate low to no cost leads.

  1. Use the System (My Lead System Pro) – This method requires 10 minutes per day, using the copy/paste and existing pre-configured sales funnels.  The estimated leads produced is 5+ per day.  When prospecting, ask key questions such as “Are you generating many leads on Twitter today?”
  2. Work Events -This method requires 2-3 hours per week attending 2 events in your area per week.  This method will produce 50 leads minimum (7 leads per day).  Find good networking events and get as many business cards as possible without introducing what you do.  Then follow-up with them the next day on the phone.  This is magical, since no one is doing it; rather everyone is pitching their company, program, or product.  Here is Ray’s script “Would you be open to a side project that doesn’t interfere with what you are currently doing.”
  3. Contest Entry Boxes -  This method takes 2-3 hours per week.
  4. Post it Notes – This strategy takes 4-5 hours per week placing a stamped post-it note all around town.  The suggested text is as follows:  “Superstars Only – Make $50-$300K – Don’t Even Call Unless You Are a Producer and Can Prove It.”  Larry Beacham has used this method to generate 35 calls to his GoogleVoice mail from 100 notes.  The technique requires posture, and although it shouldn’t be stated as a job opportunity many will perceive it that way.  Larry suggests
  5. Realtor Signs – While driving around town, call 5-20 realtors, asking them “Would you be open to a way to making an income that has nothing to do with real estate?”  Today most real estate professionals are having trouble surviving.
  6. Free Seminar or Webinar – This method requires 4-5 hours weekly, using content from MLSP in your own webinars.  Prior to the seminar, ask attendees to describe their main issue or problem with online marketing, and then try to address their answers in the form of an advertisment for a second session which will address their main issues.
  7. Really Going for Referrals – This method although only taking 1-2 hours weekly will produce 5-50 leads per person.  For people who tell you “no,” ask “You have got to know someone who has been affected by the economy or lost their job; would you mind if we shared this with them?”  If still “no,” then say ” No? Really? No one you want to help?  Someone struggling?”  After you contact their referrals, call the person back for more.
  8. Card Grab – This method takes 1-2 hours weekly and can produce 10-30 leads per day.  Find places in your area that have corkboards where people place their business cards or advertising.  Call them and say “Not sure where I found your card, but would you be open to a side project that doesn’t interfere with what you are doing?”  These are people who want to make more money or they wouldn’t be advertising.
  9. Local Google Alerts – This method takes 1-2 hours weekly and can generate 5+ leads per day.  Google will alert you of news in cities you might want to develop a team.  Don’t watch the news, but let the news come to you if it will help you get more leads, e.g., learn about when a mortgage company closes in the area.  Contact people featured in the news and prospect them by building relationships vs. beating them over the head.
  10. People You Meet – This method takes 1-2 hours per week and can generate 5+ leads per day.  Don’t explain or present and keep it loose, oriented to family, occupation, recreation.  Be rushed and tell them “gotta run,” but as you are leaving ask “Just throwing it out there; would you be open to a side project…”  Ray finds that 9/10 will say “yes” or “what is it?”  Although Ray has done his company presentation over 900 times, he WILL NOT present now, because it is not duplicatable (the prospect will think this is what they have to do). Ray’s next statement is “Well, it may or not be for you, but check out the following information (website, audio CD, etc.) and I’ll follow-up afterwards.”  Get their information and try to set a follow-up appointment.

To be successful in MLM, you have to be willing to talk to people.

For every single prospect, and especially those that say “no,” Ray will ask the following:  “How are you doing generating leads online.”  Ray also advises not to forget your warm list; just don’t be addicted to the outcome, or expect sensational results!  Even Mike Dillard, the king of online attraction marketing, recently told an audience in Las Vegas, that he would go to the warm market “as long as he didn’t care if they responded or not.”  One person should not be able to bring you down, especially considering that a full-time residual income can be generated in 3 years or less in this industry (where else is this true?).  But, to be successful in MLM, you have to be willing to talk to people.  For further information and to access similar  attraction marketing leads generation training from MLSP’s leaders, please visit our MLSP Overview Page.
